pteridomania: love of ferns

Pteridomania, meaning Fern Madness or Fern Craze, a compound of Pteridophytes and mania, was coined in 1855 by Charles Kingsley in his book Glaucus, or the Wonders of the Shore:

Your daughters, perhaps, have been seized with the prevailing 'Pteridomania'...and wrangling over unpronounceable names of species (which seem different in each new Fern-book that they buy)...and yet you cannot deny that they find enjoyment in it, and are more active, more cheerful, more self-forgetful over it, than they would have been over novels and gossip, crochet and Berlin-wool.

Ferns! What lovely forms! The North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill has quite the collection of ferns and it is one of my favorite locations to go with my camera. I love the soft but modern look of the fern in the canvas above... At home in both traditional and modern interiors.

Fern prints and gallery wrapped canvases are available in my shop.

Loveliness of impossible instant film and vintage Polaroid sx-70 camera. Imperfect. Perfect.

Just got back from a lovely week on the North Carolina Outer Banks. Sailing, tubing, kiteboarding, eating, sleeping, and my lovely nieces in front of my camera. Then get up and do it all over again.

I dream of you

I've been working on more personal work lately. The combo of the more personal subject matter and new tools and processes is blowing my mind in the most uncomfortable and exquisite ways. Self portrait. iPhone shot with iPad edit.

Inside Out

Changing up my process. After 20 years of photoshop, finding fresh images working on my iPad with some lovely/quirky apps.  Fun & frustrating at times. When you are used to working with a tool, and then don't have it, it can be scary, and exciting. Getting out of my comfort zone and loving the head rush. Inside Out - digital painting.
